Lookout Mountain / Battlefield

On the day we visited the battlefield park a group of civil war reenactors was holding drills. We also visited the Chickamauga Battlefield which is about 10 miles east of Chattanooga on the Tennessee / Georgia border.

Lookout Mountain / Rock City

Most everyone of a certain age has seen the "See Rock City" barns. Well I'm happy to say that we've now seen Rock City. The walk through the gardens is very pretty and the rock formations are one of a kind. Very similiar to The Baths on Virgin Gorda.

Lookout Mountain / Ruby Falls

Lookout Mountain towers above Chattanooga. Ruby Falls and Rock City are located on the mountain. Also located at the summit is a battlefield park where one of the battles for control of Chattanooga took place.

Ruby Falls is a 400+ foot waterfall located 1200 feet deep in the mountain. It is truly a wonder of nature. The source of the water has never been located.

Chattanooga Choo Choo

We took a driving trip to Chattanooga to escape the heat wave that has afflicted the region.

Grand Harbor Marina

Grand Harbor is located at the junction of the Tenn Tom and the Tennessee River (Pickwick Lake). It is a pretty new place, about five years old. Lots of recreational boat activity on weekends. It is also the home port to Fred Meyers, the author of the cruising guides i have used this summer. The closest town is Counce, TN, population 500. Savannah, TN is about 20 miles to the north and Corinth, MS is about 20 miles south.

Buford Pusser / Walking Tall

Buford Pusser lived in Adamsville, Tenn., about 25 miles from our location.

Delta Queen at Savannah, Tenn

The Delta Queen made a port call at Savannah, Tennessee, about 20 miles downriver from our location. We drove over but they were not allowing tours of the boat. We were able to get some good shots of the boat.

Heat Wave

We've endured seven straight days of 100+ degree weather.

Battle of Shiloh

Shiloh Battlefield is about 10 miles from our location at Grand Harbor marina. The battle was fought in April 1862 with combined casualties (killed, missing, wounded) of 20,000.

Jerry & Bonnie

Jerry and Bonnie were our boat neighbors for two months at Green Turtle. They're from Michigan and have been cruising for a few years. They'll be heading for the Gulf Coast in the fall so I'm sure we"ll see them again.

Beale Street cont'd.

Beale Street

We stayed a block off Beale Street. It has a Bourbon Street ambiance, you know, The sweet smell of stale beer and horseshit.

Graceland

Hey, if Paul Simon went to Graceland then I had to go too. It's quite an operation. Lisa Marie is making a fortune. Elvis' taste in decorating was eclectic to say the least.
After the Graceland tour we drove about 20 miles south on Highway 61 to Tunica, Mississippi to see the huge complex of casino's. Before I55 was completed Hwy 61 was the only way to get to Memphis from the southwest. The Mississippi Delta has changed dramatically.
